Payne Elementary is proud to announce the addition of Saturday Arts Academy!

Your child is invited to join their classmates at Payne every Saturday morning for classes that complement the instruction they receive during the school day. See below for additional information including program offerings.

Spring 2022: Registration Dates To be Announced

Class sizes are limited, and enrollment will be on a first come, first served basis, with a portion of seats reserved for students furthest from opportunity. 

FALL SEMESTER INFORMATION

Program Dates: Classes begin Saturday, Sept. 11 and end Dec. 11.  Please note: No classes Oct. 9 and Nov. 27

Program Hours: Payne Saturday Arts Academy runs from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with different start times depending on class choices. 

  • Students in Kindergarten through fifth grade may register for one, two, or three classes. 
  • PK3 and PK4 students will join a one- or two-hour cohort. 

Available Programs:

Music – Piano, Violin, Drums & Circle Time

Provided by DC Strings Workshop: This non-profit believes young people should experience the joys of music. Keyboards, drum pads and violins will be provided to Kindergarteners to fifth graders. Circle Time Music classes are offered to PK3 and PK4 students.

Theater & Performance Arts

Provided by Theatre Lab:  D.C.’s largest and most comprehensive non-profit school for the dramatic arts will bring classes that emphasize drama games and exercises designed to engage the imagination, promote self-confidence, encourage literacy, and encourage ensemble spirit. Students participate in a variety of theater activities, including improvisation, scene study, storytelling, creative writing, comedy, and mime.

Sports Clinics – Basketball, Soccer, Football & more

Provided by Volo Sports Foundation: The non-profit organization believes in unlocking the power of play by making opportunities for youth sports more accessible for all kids. Payne students will participate in 1.5-hour weekly clinics taught by specialized coaches and mentors, rotating for two weeks each through 1) soccer, 2) basketball, 3) flag football, and 4) student’s choice. Registration includes a t-shirt. Note: This is an 8-week session. In case of rain cancellations, make-up dates will be added to the end of the session.

Robotics Science Lab

Provided by Payne’s own Mr. Creef: Science teacher Doug Creef will run a 12-week science program where children will program age-appropriate robots and participate in cool, hands-on science labs.

Tae Kwon Do:

Provided by Payne’s own Dr. Crumb: The school’s own martial arts expert, Dr. Brian Crumb, will teach students the fundamentals of Tae Kwon Do.

Program Tuition: Classes are funded by a special school fund, PTSA fundraising, partner organization fundraising, and family tuition. 

Suggested Tuition for Payne Students & Siblings – 

One class: $120; two classes: $240; three classes: $360

Required Tuition for Non- Payne Students- 

One class: $240; two classes: $480; three classes: $720

Payne families are asked to contribute what they can afford: full, partial or waived tuition. Note: no Payne student will be turned away based on ability to pay.
